How this is worked out
- Vaping Products Duty is a flat £2.20 per 10ml of e-liquid, whatever the nicotine strength.
- VAT at 20% is charged on top of the duty, so the real increase is £2.64 per 10ml (£0.264 per ml).
- Your usage is converted to ml per day, multiplied by the months you chose (30.44 days a month), then rounded up to whole bottles.
- "Cost now" uses the price per bottle you entered. "Cost after 1 Oct" is that price plus the duty and its VAT.
Estimate only. Savings assume you buy the same e-liquid at today's pre-duty price before 1 October 2026. Retailer prices, stock and supplier pass-through may vary, and prices can also move for reasons unrelated to the duty. This tool is general guidance, not tax advice.

What is the UK Vaping Products Duty (vape tax)?
The Vaping Products Duty is a new excise tax on vaping liquid, confirmed in the Autumn Budget and coming into force on 1 October 2026. It applies a single flat rate of £2.20 for every 10ml of e-liquid, whatever the nicotine strength — so 0mg shortfills are taxed at the same rate as high-strength nic salts. Because standard VAT of 20% is then charged on top of the duty, the true cost added at the till is closer to £2.64 per 10ml.
In practice that means a typical 10ml e-liquid gains about £2.64 in tax, a 50ml shortfill about £13.20, and a 100ml shortfill around £26.40 — before any retailer markup. Prefilled devices are taxed on the volume of liquid inside them, so a 2ml pod carries roughly £0.53 of duty and VAT.
How to use this vape tax calculator
Step 1 — pick your bottle size and price
Choose 10ml, 50ml, 100ml or enter a custom size. The price box is pre-filled with our current bundle price for that size, but you can change it to whatever you actually pay so the comparison reflects your real basket.
Step 2 — tell it how much you vape
Use the Light, Average or Heavy shortcuts, or set your own rate — for example two 10ml bottles a week, or one 100ml shortfill a month. The calculator converts that into millilitres a day, which is what the duty is charged on.
Step 3 — choose your months of backstock
Drag the slider to the number of months you want to cover, or tap 3, 6, 12 or 24 months. The calculator instantly shows how many bottles that needs, what the order costs today, what the identical order would cost from 1 October 2026, and the total saving. The comparison table underneath lets you weigh a 3-month top-up against a full year in one glance.
Should you stock up before the 2026 vape tax?
E-liquid keeps well — an unopened bottle typically stays good for around two years — so buying ahead of the duty is one of the few legitimate ways to beat the price rise. If you know your monthly usage, use the calculator to size a sensible stock-up: many vapers find that buying a few months of their favourite vape juice or refillable pod liquid now locks in a meaningful saving.
The maths is simple: every 10ml you buy before 1 October 2026 is 10ml you never pay £2.64 of tax on. A moderate vaper getting through two 10ml bottles a week saves over £270 by covering a full year. Whether you use open-system vape kits, prefilled pod kits, or you're switching to nicotine pouches (which are not covered by the liquid duty), planning ahead of October 2026 is worth the few minutes it takes.
Vape tax UK FAQs
When does the UK vape tax start?
The Vaping Products Duty comes into force on 1 October 2026. Any e-liquid bought before that date is not subject to the new duty, which is why stocking up early saves money.
How much is the vape tax in the UK?
It's a flat rate of £2.20 for every 10ml of vaping liquid. VAT at 20% is charged on top of the duty, so the real increase at the till is about £2.64 per 10ml — roughly £26.40 on a 100ml shortfill.
Does the vape tax apply to nicotine-free e-liquid?
Yes. The duty is a single flat rate on all vaping liquid regardless of nicotine strength — including 0mg/nicotine-free shortfills. The government chose a flat rate so vapers can't reduce the tax by switching to weaker liquid.
Should I stock up on e-liquid before October 2026?
Buying e-liquid before 1 October 2026 means you pay today's price with no duty added. Use the calculator above to see your exact saving. E-liquid has a long shelf life (typically around two years unopened), so a sensible stock-up can lock in real savings.
Are nicotine pouches affected by the vape tax?
No. The Vaping Products Duty applies to vaping liquid only. Tobacco-free nicotine pouches are not vaping liquids, so they fall outside this particular duty.
How is the vape tax collected?
The duty is paid by manufacturers and importers and passed down the supply chain, alongside a Vaping Duty Stamps scheme. For shoppers it simply shows up as a higher shelf price on e-liquid from 1 October 2026.
How many months of e-liquid should I stock up on?
Most vapers can comfortably buy 6 to 12 months ahead. Sealed e-liquid typically has a shelf life of around two years from bottling, so anything up to about 24 months of your usual usage is realistic — beyond that you risk bottles going past their best. Use the months of backstock slider above to see the saving at each length before you decide.
Does e-liquid go off if I buy a lot at once?
Unopened e-liquid generally lasts around two years. Keep it somewhere cool, dark and dry — a cupboard rather than a windowsill or a car — and away from heat. Nicotine and flavour can fade a little over time, but properly stored liquid stays perfectly usable well past a 12-month stock-up.
