E-Liquids

E-liquids, also known as vape juice or e-juice, are flavoured mixtures used in electronic cigarettes to create vapour.

E-liquids are added to the tank or pod or device. When the device is activated, the liquid is pulled into the coil or heating element. This element then heats up, vaporising the liquid for you to inhale.

The e-liquid gives the vape its unique flavour, and provides a smoke-free way for you to enjoy nicotine.

What’s in e-liquids?

Vape juice is made up of the following ingredients:

• Food-grade flavouring: Adds taste and aroma for an enjoyable vaping experience
• Propylene glycol (PG): A thin, tasteless liquid that carries flavour and provides a stronger throat hit
• Vegetable glycerine (VG): A thicker liquid that creates dense vapour clouds and gives a smoother inhale
• Nicotine (optional): The stimulant that satisfies cravings
• Distilled water: Sometimes added to thin out the mixture

VG/PG ratios refer to the proportions of vegetable glycerin (VG) and propylene glycol (PG) used in an e-liquid.

As VG and PG are the base liquids of the mixture that carry flavour and nicotine, different proportions deliver different vaping experiences. For instance, the specific ratio can impact:

• Flavour: Higher PG ratios tend to deliver stronger flavours
• Throat hit: Higher PG ratios deliver strong throat hit, while higher VG ratios are a smoother alternative
• Vapour production: Higher VG ratios tend to produce larger clouds
• Consistency: VG is thicker than PG, so higher VG ratios produce thicker e-liquids

Knowing your vaping style can help you choose the perfect e-liquid. The three vaping styles are:

Mouth-to-lung (MTL)

MTL vaping mimics the sensation of smoking a cigarette, where you draw the vapour into your mouth before inhaling it into your lungs. This makes it great for smokers looking to transition to a healthier alternative. MTL vapers generally choose higher nicotine strengths and thinner e-liquids – a 50/50 vape juice is ideal.

Restricted-direct-to-lung (RDL)

RDL vaping sits in between MTL and DTL. It involves breathing vapour directly into your lungs like DTL, but with a more restricted airflow, creating a tighter draw like MTL vaping. It gives a good balance of flavour and cloud size, making it great for people moving from MTL to bigger, more open puffs. RDL vapers can use the same e-liquids as MTL vapers, as the relaxed airflow is what makes the experience unique.

Direct-to-lung (DTL)

DTL vaping involves inhaling vapour directly into the lungs, similar to how you’d breathe in deeply. It's perfect for experienced vapers who like large clouds and intense flavour. We recommend a lower nicotine concentration and higher VG blend.

• 50/50 or 60/40: Balanced e-liquids with around an even mix of VG and PG. Suitable for most MTL devices and ideal for beginners.
• 70/30 or 80/20: Higher VG blends made for DTL vaping. Produce bigger clouds and better suited for more experienced vapers. Not suitable for low-power or pod devices.
• Freebase nicotine e-liquid: The original form of nicotine used in most e-liquids. Freebase nicotine e-liquids are a purified form of nicotine that delivers a stronger throat hit, especially at higher strengths.
• Nic salts: E-liquids using nicotine salt instead of freebase. Delivers a smooth throat hit and quick nicotine absorption – great for new vapers.
• Bar salts: Nic salts designed to replicate the flavour and experience of disposable vapes. Strong, sweet flavours and smooth hits. Used in refillable pod kits. Learn the difference between nic salts and bar salts.
• Shortfills: Large bottles of nicotine-free e-liquid, typically 50ml or 100ml, with space to add a nicotine shot. While typically high VG and meant for DTL vaping, high PG shortfills are now available too.
• Nicotine shots: Small bottles (usually 10ml) of concentrated nicotine you can mix into shortfills to add your desired strength. A nicotine-free shortfill and a nic shot makes a complete e-liquid.
• Pre-filled pods: Pods that already come filled with e-liquid, usually nic salts.

The right strength depends on factors like your previous smoking habits, your tolerance, and how your body responds to vaping.

• 0mg: A nicotine-free option perfect for social smokers, hobbyists, or those looking to dilute juice that contains nicotine to make it milder.  
• 3mg: A low-level option, ideal as the final step for those quitting smoking or light smokers. 
• 5mg-6mg: Another low-strength option that'll still produce the nicotine effect you're after. Suited for those who are getting through around 10 cigarettes a day.
• 10mg-12mg: A mid-strength option suited to the average smoker getting through around a pack a day.
• 18mg-20mg: A high-strength option suited for those smoking over a pack of cigarettes a day. 

Nicotine strength will dictate the kind of device you can use, so be sure to check beforehand.

What is TDP compliance?

The Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) is a UK and EU legislation that regulates the vaping industry and nicotine products in general.

The TPD regulates what volumes of nicotine e-liquids can be sold in. For instance, e-liquids containing nicotine can't be sold in bottles over 10ml.

It also dictates the maximum strength that vape juice can be sold in, as well as the volume of e-liquid that a tank or pod can hold.
